GARDENERS clearing out their ponds ahead of the winter are being urged to be careful about throwing away unwanted plants which can invade rivers and ponds.

The government's "Be Plant Wise" campaign is raising awareness of invasive aquatic plants, which are often found in garden ponds but can choke up waterways and cost huge sums to tackle if even small fragments escape into the wild.
